A.I. and Lawyers: Don't Let the Terminator Kill Your Ethics

This presentation explores the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the legal profession. Attendees will gain an understanding of the core functionalities of AI, including its ability to analyze data, recognize patterns, and predict future behavior. The session will delve into the ethical considerations surrounding AI use in legal practices, guided by relevant Florida Bar Ethics Opinions and rules of professional conduct. Through real-world case studies, participants will see practical applications of AI in law firms, such as document review, legal research, and litigation strategy development. Best practices for integrating AI responsibly will be discussed, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, secure technology use, and proper oversight. By the end of the presentation, legal professionals will be equipped with the knowledge to navigate the ethical challenges of AI and leverage its capabilities to enhance their practice, ensuring they remain competent and compliant in an increasingly digital landscape.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Hon. Michael Baggé-Hernández

Michael C. Baggé-Hernández is a County Court Judge in Hillsborough County, Florida, appointed in 2019 and elected without opposition in 2022. Prior to his judgeship, he spent ten years as an Assistant United States Attorney, splitting his time between the District of Puerto Rico and the Middle District of Florida. He prosecuted federal crimes, including organized crime, narcotics, immigration-related offenses, violent crime, white-collar crime, and child exploitation. He also litigated asset forfeiture cases and represented the U.S. in appellate court. In 2018, he served as a Resident Legal Advisor at the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador. Previously, he was an Assistant State Attorney in Hillsborough County. Judge Baggé-Hernández, a native Spanish speaker, has worked with the DOJ and ABA across Latin America, educating legal professionals during transitions to accusatorial legal systems. He holds a B.A. degree from Florida State University and a Juris Doctor from Stetson University.
