FEATURED PRESENTATION:

This program will describe the types of consumer protection statutes that exist (FDUTPA, home solicitations, telemarketing, etc.), as well as the tools for enforcement of the statutes. The OAG as enforcing authority has additional powers and responsibilities under most of the consumer protection statutes, so the presentation will explain the differences but still show how the statutes can be enforced by private attorneys. The presenters will also give examples that show the application of the statutes and talk about the cases that relate to major interpretations of the statutes.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:

Ellen K. Lyons

Ellen K. Lyons has more than two decades of experience as an attorney. She was a partner at Carlton Fields, and now works as Special Counsel at the Office of the Attorney General, State of Florida, in the Consumer Protection Division. Ms. Lyons is rated by Martindale-Hubbell as A-V Preeminent and is a member of the Florida Trend Legal Elite. While at Carlton Fields, she served as General Counsel to Dawning Family Services f/k/a The Alpha House of Tampa, a safe place for homeless pregnant women and mothers with young children. She also has written about consumer finance laws and statutory offers of judgment. She serves as VP of Advocacy for the Hillsborough PTA and serves as Civics Liaison for the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

Sasha Funk Granai

Sasha Funk Granai is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Law. She worked in large private law firms in both Miami and Tampa before joining the Office of the Attorney General, State of Florida. As Deputy Director of the Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Attorney General, Sasha oversees the efforts of consumer protection attorneys in multiple offices across the State of Florida. She has special knowledge of the unique powers of the Office of the Attorney General granted by the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. She manages large litigation teams and has tried multiple cases to judgment.
