FEATURED PRESENTATION:

Like the Federal and Florida Rules of Civil Procedure, the Florida Small Claims Rules are to implement “the just, speedy, and inexpensive” determination of a legal action. But the small-claims rules take a different route to that end. They give judges more discretion and take away some of the tools that parties to civil cases ordinarily have. By attending this presentation, participants will develop strategies for advocacy in small-claims court as they learn the key rules that distinguish these cases from other civil litigation.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Michael J. Hooi is a Hillsborough County judge in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida. Before being appointed to the court in 2021, he practiced at Stichter, Riedel, Blain & Postler, P.A., in Tampa, Florida, where he handled corporate and consumer bankruptcies, litigation in state and federal trial and appellate courts, out-of-court workouts, and business transactions. While in practice, he was recognized in multiple years by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star, by Best Lawyers as a One to Watch, and by the Florida Supreme Court for exceptional pro bono service. He began his legal career as a law clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit for Judge Charles R. Wilson after graduating from the University of Florida Levin College of Law and Vanderbilt University.
