Federal Indigent Defense Developments

While most people have a general concept of what public defenders in general do, few understand the scope of federal public defenders. This talk will start with explaining the work done by federal public defenders and the office in this district in particular.

The second half of the talk will focus on a topic of general interest to litigators, namely using sarcasm in court. Sarcasm is a rhetorical device and can be not only a legitimate, but also highly effective, argument tool.  While there are some areas where sarcasm is taboo, it has and can be used effectively in cross-examination, summation, and in some pleadings. A number of examples of both effective and inappropriate sarcasm will be offered to show how to best use it.
